The Reason We Struggle with Insecurity

We live in a world where comparison is just a scroll away. Social media, magazines, and even casual conversations often showcase the best moments of others’ lives—the vacations, the celebrations, the picture-perfect family outings. And in contrast, we sit with our behind-the-scenes reality, filled with chaos, self-doubt, and imperfections. As the quote wisely states, “The reason why we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our behind the scenes with everyone else’s highlight reels.”

The Illusion of Perfection

We rarely see the full picture of someone else’s life. We see curated content—filtered images, success stories, and happy moments. What we don’t see are the struggles, the failures, the moments of self-doubt. It’s easy to believe that everyone else has it all together while we’re barely holding on. But the truth? No one’s life is as perfect as it appears online or even in real life.

The Danger of Comparison

When we measure our worth against someone else’s best moments, we set ourselves up for disappointment. We start to feel like we’re not doing enough, not successful enough, not happy enough. But comparison is a thief—it robs us of joy, gratitude, and self-acceptance. Instead of celebrating our own progress, we fixate on what we lack.

Embracing Your Own Journey

The key to overcoming insecurity isn’t found in trying to match someone else’s highlight reel—it’s in embracing our own story, messy parts and all. Growth happens in the behind-the-scenes moments: the late-night struggles, the hard conversations, the small victories no one claps for. Those moments matter just as much as the ones we proudly share.

Instead of comparing, try shifting your focus:

Love Yourself, Make Peace with Yourself: The First Step to a Peaceful Life

Loving yourself isn’t about arrogance or thinking you’re perfect—it’s about accepting who you are, flaws and all. It’s about recognizing that you are worthy of kindness, respect, and love, starting with the love you give yourself.

Too often, we are our own worst critics. We replay mistakes, compare ourselves to others, and let negative thoughts take root. We forgive others but hold onto shame, guilt, or regret when it comes to ourselves. But peace cannot exist where self-hatred lives. The first step to a truly peaceful life is making peace with you.

Making peace with yourself means letting go of the unrealistic expectations you’ve placed on yourself. It means accepting that you are a work in progress—just like everyone else. It means understanding that your past mistakes do not define you; they shape you, teach you, and help you grow.

Start speaking to yourself the way you would speak to someone you love. Replace self-criticism with self-compassion. Instead of saying, I’m not good enough, remind yourself, I am doing my best, and that is enough. Instead of dwelling on the past, ask yourself, What have I learned, and how can I move forward?

Too often, we downplay our successes, waiting for validation. But what if we started acknowledging our own progress? Being proud of yourself means recognizing your efforts, no matter how small. Reflect on your growth. Write down moments when you overcame obstacles or stepped out of your comfort zone. By doing this, you create a habit of acknowledging your worth and abilities.

Self-Pride vs. External Validation

It’s natural to appreciate recognition, but relying on external praise can leave you feeling empty when it’s absent. Instead, cultivate internal validation. Your hard work, resilience, and dedication are enough.

Practice self-affirmation. Replace doubt with encouragement: “I am capable. I am growing. I am proud of my progress.” This mindset shift allows you to find satisfaction in your journey rather than in the approval of others.

Steps to Cultivate Self-Pride

  2. Be Kind to Yourself – Speak to yourself with encouragement.

A Diagnosis Does Not Define You

As a therapist, I’ve had so many clients walk into my office carrying the weight of multiple diagnoses—some given by different providers, some self-diagnosed through online research, and some that may have been true at one point but are no longer relevant. It’s frustrating because these are people, not a collection of labels on a piece of paper.

Some individuals can brush off a list of mental health diagnoses, while others cling to them, wearing them like a heavy jacket—sometimes even ten jackets—layered on because that’s what they’ve been told they are. But when we sit down together and actually walk through the diagnostic criteria from the DSM-5-TR, many come to realize they don’t meet the criteria for certain diagnoses at all. Instead, they may have two conditions that overlap, or when combined, form a different, more accurate diagnosis.

This is why I believe in simplifying whenever possible. I always err on the side of the most minor diagnosis until we’ve worked together long enough to understand what’s really going on. A primary diagnosis, with a possible secondary, creates space for healing instead of overwhelm.

Now, let me be clear—I’m not a medical doctor, and this doesn’t apply to medical conditions. Always consult with your primary care physician. But here’s the key: don’t just let them speak at you. Engage in conversation. You are the expert on you, and you should always advocate for your health.

At the end of the day, a diagnosis is just one small part of who you are. You are beautifully and wonderfully made. Yes, we all have struggles, quirks, and imperfections, but those don’t define us. Instead, they can be used to educate, foster understanding, and extend grace to ourselves and others.

So let’s be kind. You never truly know what someone else is carrying. The world is messy, and life is hard, but there is beauty in the ashes. And no matter where you are in your journey—you are okay. You are enough. Just as you are.

Preconceived Notions: More Than Meets the Eye

i’m not interested in whether you’ve stood with the great; i’m interested in whether you’ve sat with the broken.

Preconceived notions—they’re something, aren’t they?

I remember walking into my clinic one day and feeling every set of eyes on me. At my previous job, I was required to dress professionally for my outpatient clients. But I also worked as a therapist in a 30-day inpatient residential treatment facility. Two vastly different worlds, yet I had learned how to balance both.

That particular day, I had outpatient clients to see, but I also needed to check in on anywhere from 7 to 16 inpatient clients. As I walked into the clinic to pull a client, I saw the looks—“You are not one of us.” I get that a lot.

That day, I was in my professional attire, wearing a wig (I lost my hair when I started this job), makeup, and jewelry. I looked the part, but inside, I was screaming. My outside didn’t match my inside.

I pulled my client aside, and her expression said it all—disdain, skepticism, judgment. She didn’t hold back, either. “You’re judging me in your fancy clothes and dolled-up hair,” she said.

As she talked, I quietly started removing my jewelry. Then my sweater, revealing my tattoos. I wiped off my makeup. And finally, I pulled off my wig and casually hung it on my boss’s computer.

The shock on her face was priceless.

In that moment, I saw her walls come down. I shared a bit of my own story, and I watched her eyes well with tears. She looked at me, softer now, and said, “You are one of us.”

Friends, we are all the same. We all bleed when we’re cut. We all turn to dust when we die. And we are all one bad decision away from destruction. She thought I was judging her based on my appearance, but in reality, I was simply wearing what my job required. And in return, she judged me for it.

But when I looked into her eyes, I didn’t see her past, her mistakes, or her circumstances—I saw brokenness, sadness, despair, and pain.

So there we were, sitting across from each other, makeup-free, hairless, raw, and real. I reached across the desk and held her hands. Tears fell from both of our eyes as I told her:

You are worthy. You are enough. Honestly, you deserve the life you dream of, and you can have it—one step at a time.

That moment changed me. It reminded me that the Lord is not done with any of us. There is hope and no one should ever treat you as “less than” because you, too, are a child of the King.

Does that mean I had a horrible childhood? Nope, quite the opposite. Does that mean I don’t love Jesus? Nope, I have a very strong relationship. It means I have a story.

I sometimes use my story, parts of it, to help others because I never want anyone to feel alone. You need to know that God sees you and captures every tear you cry (Psalm 56:8). With Him, you are not alone. You are enough, you are worthy, and you are loved by the King of Kings.
